It is possible the name comes from the Quechua word wakachina, which might mean hidden lagoon. It is a naturally-occurring lake that locals believe contain therapeutic waters and sands. Another legend tells the lake was created by an ancient princess, who derobed in order to bathe, but saw a male approaching so she ran away, leaving her mirror behind which turned into the lake, but the princess lives on as a mermaid in the waters. Sandboarding and riding on dune buggies are very popular activities to do in the surrounding desert.📍Paracas National Reserve is a beautiful and protected coastal park near the town of Paracas. Day 8, 9, and 10, Peru:Tambopata Research Center in the the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. The research center is the only place inside the Tambopata National Preserve where tourists can stay inside the preserve. And what an experience it is to be in the Amazon, wake up to its piercing greens and animal sounds in our three walled room that is open to the jungle. Guides take you on walks that reveal the immense diversity of Amazon’s geology, flora and fauna. There are towering tree canopies, bamboo forest, palm swamps and islands. There is nothing like seeing monkeys, birds and other animals in their natural habitat from a respectful distance, looking up at towering trees that are almost ecosystems in themselves, walking through the forests with only the sounds of insects and animals. We talked about climate change, deforestation and loss of habitat with our guide who lamented the decline in the number of butterflies and the cutting down of Ironwood trees that have stood for centuries. Still Tambopata is an example of what conservation and letting more-than-human species have their space can do. 📍Isla TaquileOptræden på torvet. Udover denne optræden var vi heldige at overvære forberedelserne til morgendagens festival. Folk var i deres fine tøj og der blev øvet musik og dans, der var et optog på tværs af øen. Alt det hvidmalede på torvet og husene er pga festivalen.
